8,500 take to their bikes for first ever Sky Ride Dublin

Some 8,500 people took to the streets of Dublin on two wheels on Sunday 11th September for the first ever Sky Ride Dublin, making it the largest group cycling event that Ireland has ever seen!
Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague officially opened the event, joined by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, the Sky Ride Dublin ambassadors Nicky Byrne of Westlife and stylist Lisa Fitzpatrick, and Team Sky pro cyclist Russell Downing.
8km of Dublin’s streets were closed to cars, giving people of all ages and abilities a unique chance to ride their bikes freely around the city centre with no traffic. The free event, hosted by Sky in partnership with Dublin City Council, allowed riders to take in the route at their own pace whilst enjoying some well-known landmarks including Merrion Square, the Pepper Canister Church, Grand Canal Square, Samuel Beckett Bridge, the National Convention Centre, and the Custom House. Participants were treated to a whole host of activities and entertainment throughout the day along the route, with performances from local buskers, demonstrations by RampRage BMXers, and the Sky 3D ‘outdoor living room’ experience.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague said: “Dublin prides itself on being a cycle friendly city, but rarely do we see so many cyclists together as we’ve seen today at Sky Ride. Well done to everyone involved here today.”
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: “I’m happy to come along and see so many people participate in this event. The benefits are obvious – for young people in a city, there’s learning how to cycle in a group with no traffic and for families it’s an opportunity for good healthy exercise. I’m all for that!”

Sky Ride Ambassador Nicky Byrne commented: “It’s been a fantastic day here at Sky Ride Dublin with people of all ages getting back on their bikes and enjoying cycling around on traffic-free streets. I hope that all 8,500 people that have taken part today will be inspired to start cycling more regularly and continue to have fun on two wheels.”

Do Not Ignore Signs of Heart Attack: Byrne

Nicky Byrne, the member of Westlife group, grieved over his father’s death, revealed that his father would have lived if they hadn’t ignored the stomach pain.
Nikki Byrne Snr died due to heart attack when he was 60 years of age. The man was fit and healthy and his death was sudden.
The oldest member of the popular band stated that alike his father thousands of Irish men die without cause every year due to ignorance towards their health and early signs of cardiovascular diseases. He said that his father’s death was an eye opener as these small signs and indications should not be ignored in order to stay healthy.
Byrne will be participating in the campaign which will be initiated by the Irish Heart Foundation to encourage more men to stop ignoring the early signs of a heart attack.
The campaign will involve the cartoons that will indicate that how men often convince themselves and do not go to see the doctor.
IHF Medical Director Dr. Angie Brown stated that the possible symptoms of heart attack include sweating, nausea or light-headedness, but males are embarrassed in calling ambulance. “Don’t waste time on going to the GP or driving yourself to the hospital. If you’re having a heart attack, then don’t die of embarrassment. Dial 999”, Brown said.

Westlife returns to Manila for 'Gravity Tour' 2011

Bonhams to sell Aston Martin owned by Shane Filan of Irish pop group Westlife

CHICHESTER.- Bonhams will be offering a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 4.2 Litre Sports Saloon owned by Shane Filan of Westlife at the Goodwood Revival on Friday 16th September 2011. The car is expected to fetch £250,000-300,000.

Manufactured on 4th May 1964 the car was found in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by marque specialist Desmond J Smail where it was in need of full restoration. It was re-imported to the UK several years ago and sold to singer Shane Filan of the Irish pop group 'Westlife' as a project car to be restored by DJS to the client's specification. Westlife was formed in July 1998 with a five-member line-up and is the only act in the history of British and Irish popular music to have their first seven singles go straight to No.1 in the charts. Shane is 'car mad' and bought the DB5 as it was something he always wanted; it was also a 30th birthday present to himself. However, as he is away touring for the next year or so, it will not be used and this is why he is selling it.

The restoration has taken almost three years to complete and was viewed by Shane several times during the process. Works undertaken include a full body-off rebuild: powder coating the chassis; new doorframes and outer skins; and re-bodying in places with new steel where required, the roof and boot being retained. Recognised specialist Bodylines carried out the bodywork restoration, while repainting in Silver Birch was entrusted to specialist Lone Pine Garage. The Aston was returned to DJS for completion, which included a full engine rebuild to 4.2 litres capacity using Cosworth pistons; overhaul of the gearbox and rear axle; reconditioned brake servos and callipers; all gauges overhauled; dashboard repainted; and a full interior re-trim in black leather with matching Wilton carpets. Parts renewed include the wheels, tyres, brakes discs, Cooper nickel pipes, suspension, wiring loom, roof lining, brightwork and exhaust system (now stainless steel). In addition, the car was fitted with air conditioning and a modern Sony stereo system. Only 400-or-so miles have been covered since the full restoration.

The DB5 was the first and remains the most famous of all the 'James Bond' Aston Martins, having appeared in no fewer than five movies of the series, beginning with Goldfinger in 1964.

HE was the man of the moment but some people didn't want to be seen going to his party.

It may have been an intensely personal birthday for Bertie Ahern, but several of his lifelong friends still ducked their heads in the back of a black Range Rover that whisked them into the car park. Between 7 and 8.30pm, the same black Range Rover and a black Mercedes made several round trips to the venue, avoiding the public glare of the front entrance.

One passenger could clearly be seen sandwiching his head between his legs and wrapping his arms around the top of his head in an absurd effort to guard his identity. Who was this strangely aloof guest?

But then, maybe it just wouldn't be a Bertie moment without some element of intrigue. Bertie's girls, Georgina and Cecelia, had themed a top secret menu around moments of significance in their family's lives. The dinner consisted of three courses: a self-service starters buffet, a main course choice of seabass and steak, and for dessert, well, birthday cake. “We’ve travelled the world and I’d say that was the nicest cake I ever had,” saidfamily friends Rose and Alex Clarke as they left the party.

“There are load of blue balloons and lots of pictures of Bertie as a young man on the walls,” said another party-goer. “It's like any party that you’ve been to; like any family it's just a private party.” Each of the tables was given the name of one of Bertie's favourite places, amongst them Old Trafford, Hill 16, Moore Street and the Dail.

“I would say it (the celebration) is far more normal than extravagant,” the partygoer said. “It's tastefully done: it's not ridiculous by any means.” Although Nicky Byrne from Westlifewas among the guests and sang a couple of songs for the birthday boy, the main music was provided by a local band. Among the songs which got the revellers onto the dancefloor were classics such as ‘Daydream Believer', ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love', and ‘All Shook Up.'.

Private parties and functions are common at Croke Park – they usually host over 20 birthdays in any year, as well as a lesser number of wedding receptions and anniversaries. The venue offers event coordinators to assist although last night it looked like Cecelia and Georgina had everything under control. “We've been trying to organise a party like this for years, but he hates this kind of thing and he's blaming us for all this now,” laughed Cecelia. “You have to give something back to your parents when you love them. So he's being a dutiful dad and turning up,” added Georgina.

They insisted that this was to be no star-studded hooley but was “just his close friends and family. There's no razzmatazz,” explained Cecelia. “We just wanted to theme it around things he loves, and this place [Croke Park] is his major hobby, and we both spent all our childhood coming in and out of here with him.” Operating under regular licensing laws, the revellers at last night's 60th would have been served until 12.30 before bringing the political birthday bash of the year to an end.

At one stage at the front entrance, which was used by the majority of guests, there were five security guards and one guard. At the back entrance, where the high-speed Range Rover deliveries were ushered, there was one solitary security guard and a patrolling guard. At one stage, a patrol car idled in and around the car park, seemingly curious at the unusual nighttime activity in the area. Staff were not made aware of the individual guests and it is believed that a list wasn't even submitted to event organisers, although this would not be unusual.

As mystery continued to surround the whereabouts and even the when-abouts of the guest of honour, who hadn't been spotted by 9.30pm, one thing was for sure – if he had managed to slip in through one of the stadium’s multiple entrances, then nobody on the outside would ever know. Even the shutters at the front of the stadium creaked open and closed as the guests trickled in.

Welcome to Bertie's birthday – more impregnable protection would not even have surrounded him at the height of his political life. Brushing past reporters, photographers and protestors, the party goers kept their tickets in their pockets. Designed to look like match tickets, the invites were sent out a fortnight ago. They were sent to the party faithful shortly before it was revealed that the former Teflon Taoiseach has managed to claim €270,000 in expenses since leaving office, more than any other Taoiseach. The planned birthday bash, details of his expenses, and comments from his former partner Celia Larkin ensured that Bertie has stayed in the headlines recently.

It was the second big bash in as many months for the Ahern family with Cecelia celebrating her 30th birthday last month in Il Segreto restaurant on Merrion Row. Some of the same guests attended both parties – including Yvonne Keating – but without the same level of press scrutiny at Cecilia's party. Last night they partied into the wee hours to celebrate Bertie’s milestone.

The Goodwood Revival – a three-day festival to celebrate the cars and motorcycles which competed at Sussex motor ­racing circuit from 1948 to 1966 – takes place this month, when an Aston Martin owned by Shane Filan of Westlife goes up for sale.

The Aston is a 1964 DB5 4.2litre sports saloon – the classic James Bond car driven by Sean Connery in ­Goldfinger.

The model up for sale was ­discovered in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. It has taken almost three years to ­restore the car with Shane ­carefully overseeing the work.

He bought the car as a 30th ­birthday present to himself, but touring commitments made him decide to sell.

Take That Gary! The X Factor will suffer without Simon, says Westlife star Nicky

Westlife's Nicky Byrne has said he doesn't believe The X Factor will be as good without acid-tongued judge Simon Cowell.

And the Herald can reveal how the band's usual slot on the hit show now hangs in the balance since they left the music mogul's record label, SyCo.

The chart-topping singer explained how he believed the whole dynamic of the ITV programme will have changed as a result of Simon switching to X Factor USA.

"I hear Gary Barlow is good but I can't see it being as good without Simon, if I'm honest, because he and Louis had that banter, that chemistry. I know Louis likes Gary and they get on but I'm not sure if the same chemistry could be had, with anyone," he said.

"It doesn't matter who you put in that seat, it's not Simon Cowell. It's nothing against Gary but it's going to be different. And then you've not got Cheryl or Dannii either, so it's not like, you're not just missing one major cog in the wheel it's like 'wow, the whole thing has changed'. But it could be 50 times better, who knows?"

The Irish boyband has made countless key appearances on the talent contest, now in its eighth series, which has helped them launch their latest albums to TV audiences of millions.

But Nicky explained how the group are no longer assured a key slot on the programme now that they have switched labels to RCA. "I will certainly watch the show but I don't know if we'll be on it. We would all love to, of course and with Louis there thankfully we have an 'in' on it," he continued.

"But they have had us on a lot over the years and you have to remember, SyCo is the company that makes the show so hopefully it wouldn't be like that. But you never know, we might not get the show and if we don't, we'll just have to pick ourselves up and move on."

The popular singer has also done little to allay speculation that RTE is head-hunting him to co-present new programme The Voice of Ireland. But he said that it's all to do with timing and his first loyalties will always lie with Westlife as the four lads gear up to embark on a short tour next month of South Africa and South East Asia.

"I'm not going to lie -- broadcasting is something I do enjoy," he continued. "Nobody has offered me the job or anything like that but it's always nice to be mentioned in a big TV show like that. I don't know if I have the timing for something like this."

Once their next tour is complete, Westlife will be taking to the stage at the O2 Dublin on November 24 to play 'O2 SmartSounds'. A live social-media gig, it will see attendees being able to request the songs they'd like to hear on the night. "We're really looking forward to that. It's a great concept and there's also going to be a battle of the bands on the night," Nicky added.

Nicky Byrne says Westlife are on hiatus

Dubliner Nicky Byrne has revealed that the band is currently out of contract and looking forward to their future.

The Irish crooners, who parted ways with Simon Cowell's record company earlier this year, moved to RCA after they clashed creatively with Cowell.

Speaking to The Star, Byrne said that there is not a new Westlife album in the works right now.

"Right now no." he said. "Right now we are just looking forward to the Greatest Hits.

"We are out of contract at the moment which is a great position to be in because if this album does well we're looking to the future, like a footballer you are free to talk to anybody.

"At the moment I would guess Greatest Hits tour and then we might not come back with an album in the next year because it might feel too soon.

"I would say we'd probably look at what's on the table and then maybe discuss with a few other people, labels and see what's there and move forward."

However the Westlife star admitted that there is no hard feelings between the band and their former mentor Cowell.

"I texted him when the amicable departure happened and I said Simon I just want to thank you for the 13 years and I owe you an awful lot. Straight away he replied and said 'listen we're always here for you guys'."

WESTLIFE star Nicky Byrne has revealed his delight for his bandmate Kian Egan, who is preparing to become a father for the first time.

The Dublin singer told the Diary how he was delighted to hear earlier this month that Kian and his wife, Wonderland singer Jodi Albert, were expecting their first child.

The singer explained how Kian was a great help when he started his own family with wife Georgina Ahern. The couple have children, twin brothers Rocco and Jay (4).

"It's such great news. The thing about Kian is he has a load of nieces and nephews so Kian, if I'm honest, was actually giving me and Georgina tips when we started having kids, back in the day," he laughed.

Speaking at the launch of the new ad campaign for the Irish Heart Foundation earlier this week, the star who was accompanied by his wife and their twin sons, revealed that singer Jodi has always been very maternal.

"Kian was very good with kids from the offset so I really think he will be a great dad and Jodi will be a great mum, she's brilliant with Rocco and Jay, she's very very motherly. I am genuinely delighted for them," he revealed.

Meanwhile, the Dublin star -- who is tipped to be the new co-presenter of RTE's The Voice -- told the Diary that he hasn't met or spoken to former bandmate Brian McFadden since his return to Ireland.

The Australia's Got Talent judge is in town for a month with model girlfriend Vogue Williams, and although he asked Westlife member Mark Feehily to meet up last week, Nicky (32) says he hasn't heard from him at all.

"I haven't seen Brian or heard anything from him, you probably see him or hear about him more than I do," he joked.

The dad-of-two insists however that there is no bad blood between them.

"I never fell out with Brian, he's a good mate but just haven't heard from him or seen him at all," he explained.

Push to get men with heart attack fears to dial 999

FIVE MEN aged under 65 die from heart attacks every week in Ireland, deaths which could be prevented by dialling 999 according to the Irish Heart Foundation.

Launching an awareness campaign yesterday, supported by Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, chief executive officer of the IHF Michael O’Shea said middle-aged men often ignored heart attack symptoms.

“Men don’t want to cause a fuss, it’s a typical Irish male attitude,” Mr O’Shea said. “We felt these cartoons were a unique approach that would appeal to them more than a traditional advertisement.”

The cartoons show how men often convince themselves there is no need to go to hospital, emphasising people should not be embarrassed to call an ambulance when feeling ill.

Also speaking at the launch, the medical director for the IHF Dr Angie Brown said about 84 per cent of people under 65 who have heart attacks are male.

She also pointed out, however, that more women die from heart disease than from breast cancer.

“If you get to hospital within an hour, you have a 50 per cent higher chance of survival,” Dr Brown said, adding that many people delay for days after noticing the first symptoms.

She said this was clearly linked to playing down symptoms and not wishing to make a fuss.

About 6,300 people suffer heart attacks in Ireland annually but only half of these will go to hospital by ambulance, according to the organisation.

Both Dr Brown and Mr O’Shea said possible symptoms included sweating, nausea or light-headedness, not just the more dramatic symptoms people might imagine.

Dr Brown finished by saying: “Don’t waste time on going to the GP or driving yourself to the hospital. If you’re having a heart attack, then don’t die of embarrassment. Dial 999.”

Before the launch, Byrne said he and his family wished to commemorate his father, Nicky Byrne snr, who suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 60 in 2009.

Byrne (32) said he hoped this campaign would also reach out to people his own age. “People could speak to their parents, tell them to go and have an NCT on their body. You do it for your car every two years, why not for your body?”

No plans for a re-union but maybe one day

Nicky Byrne says he’d love to sing with Bryan Mc Fadden “one day” but there’s no plans for a re-union.

Nicky and the rest of Westlife are now looking forward to the tour of South Africa and South East Asia in the autumn.

Earlier this summer Robbie Williams joined Take That on stage again for a reunion tour across Europe.

But Nicky says it’s a very different situation and there’s not the same water under the bridge.

Nicky Byrne Launches New Heart Campaign

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne has launched a new campaign to encourage men to call 999 if they feel the symptoms of a heart attack.

The Byrne family raised almost a quarter of a million euro to fund the TV and radio commercials, following the death of the singer’s Dad, Nicky Senior, two years ago.

The Irish Heart Foundation campaign warns men not “die of embarrassment” and ignore the warning signs.

Speaking to 98FM News, Nicky Byrne explained how his 60-year-old Dad delayed seeking medical help:

“The thing about Dad was he was very proud of never being sick in his life, he used to tell us that he never cancelled a gig for a sore throat. I thought he was invincible as well and I think he had us all convinced that he was invincible and he’d live forever. When you see how things are now with modern medicine people live a lot longer and he should have and could have.
