Westlife add extra gig at Birmingham LG Arena

Westlife add extra gig at Birmingham LG Arena

Westlife have added another Birmingham date to their farewell tour after tickets for the first show sold out within minutes.
The boyband will now play a second date at the LG Arena on June 8 next year.
It comes after the Irish four-piece’s announcement that they are to split after 14 years together and a string of hits.
The Greatest Hits tour is already stopping off in the city on May 20. Tickets for the new date went on sale today, priced at £41.40. To book, call 0844 338 8000 or visit the website at www.theticketfactory.com
Having announced they are to split after 14 years at the top of their game, the band’s Greatest Hits Tour will see Kian, Shane, Mark and Nicky perform their 14 number one singles and other top tunes for the very last time. And for those disappointed fans who missed out on tickets to see the boys, there’s now a second chance to say you were there at the end!
Westlife, the only act in British and Irish pop history to see their first seven singles hit the top spot in the charts, have sold more than 44 million albums worldwide. They’ve won awards from Smash Hits, Top of the Pops, and the Disney Channel and even have a number of prestigious Brit Awards on their mantelpieces.
Unsurprisingly with so many accolades under their collective belt, the boys are the most successful Irish boyband ever.
The band said: “It’s almost hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for as long as we have. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and are looking forward to releasing our Greatest Hits album and performing them live on the tour as a special thank you to our fans who have supported us throughout our career.”

From left, Westlife fans Rachael Cromarty (23), Vickey Lax (31), Michelle Watson (40), Nicola Hall (28).
WESTLIFE fans camped out for three days to get their hands on tickets for their heroes’ last live shows.
Superfans Nicola Hall, 28, her mum Sharon, 53, and friends Vickey Lax, 31, and Wendy Reed, 56, and her daughter Gemma, 20, braved freezing weather to camp outside Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena.
The Washington women heard of the Irish boyband’s split yesterday and that the tour in May would be the group’s last.
Care assistant Vickey, who has been to every tour and met the band, said: “We were keeping warm inside our tent when I saw on Twitter on my phone that they had announced their split.
“We were absolutely devastated. I understand they want to pursue other things, but it feels like the end of an era.”
Although the pals were first in the queue as tickets went on sale yesterday, they were told that the best seats had been reserved for fan club members.
Nicola, a care assistant, said: “It’s absolutely shocking that we haven’t been given the best seats even though we were the first in the queue.
“You would think that the first people would get the best, but we were told that all the front-row centre seats had been reserved for the fan club.
“We’re all part of the official Westlife fan club and we weren’t informed of this.”
Paul Tappenden, marketing director for the Metro Radio Arena, said: “Westlife tickets went on sale on Tuesday 9am to their fan club, and yesterday to previous Westlife bookers.
“The event goes on general sale to the public today, and tickets are sold on a first come basis, and are allocated best seats at the time of booking.
“Most bookings are made online.

Lifelong fan Laura Butler on the day the music died as Westlife call it quits

I LOST my heart to Westlife 14 years ago -- today I've been left broken hearted by Westlife.
The boyband was the teenage soundtrack to my life and the sad news that they are no more brings me back to younger days with fondness and nostalgia.
A besotted fan from the get-go, I first heard of the then five-piece group when they burst onto the scene in 1999.
As a first-year secondary student, I was holidaying in Connemara with pals, and we were instantly in favour of them and declaring them to be better than anything else in the charts.
dream
A welcome change from Boyzone and the Spice Girls, Westlife garnered lustful sighs from us as we listened to Swear It Again for the first time on the radio.
Animated debate over what their real name was -- "is it Westside or Westlife?" -- quickly followed and my friends and I promptly chose our favourite band members.
After buying their first single and taping my A2 sized poster of Sligo native Shane Filan to my bedroom wall, my adoration for the chart-toppers was firmly cemented when tracks If I Let You Go and I Have A Dream followed.
A year later, when I was 13 and they had almost become a household name -- I spotted them at the baggage area in Dublin airport.
Overcome with a fit of nervousness and the giggles, myself and my shy cousin indiscreetly wandered over in their direction to get a closer look at them -- and managed to find a pen and a scrap of paper to bring with us.
I couldn't have been happier to return from holidays, as I left the airport that day with four out of five autographs -- Brian McFadden failed to impress -- from the group before they were swarmed by excited teens waiting in arrivals.
I seem to have been very lucky when it comes to this band -- I managed to bump into them on a number of occasions over the years, from randomly seeing Nicky Byrne shopping on Grafton Street, to literally walking into Brian McFadden in a Greystones newsagents -- where he lived up the road with ex-Kerry Katona and that just confirmed how cool I thought they were.
From seeing them at the Childline concerts and cheering to turning on the telly to cheer them on at the MTV Europe music awards, their ballads failed to hit a sour note with their adoring fans, myself included.
Although my interest waned in their later years, I've always had a soft spot for their easygoing music, with -- admittedly -- Flying Without Wings in my top five favourites.
I still enjoy belting out a few of the cheesy numbers and tend to always revert back to them when compiling my Christmas playlist for my iPod.
When the lads announced the release of a greatest hits album last week, I had a sneaky suspicion that news of a split would follow.
Crooned
They've gone from being a fresh-faced boyband to a more mature looking manband and I suppose it was only inevitable after 14 years of a hard slog in the business.
And for those of us who grew up with Shane, Mark, Nicky, Kian and Brian, it definitely reminds you of your first dance at the local disco or pretending to be a backing vocalist with a hairbrush as your parents had to suffer Uptown Girl yet another time.
Teenagers now have the likes of Justin Bieber to scream and shout over, but no-one can compare to Louis Walsh's denim-jacket wearing, floppy-haired hopefuls who crooned their way into the lives of many Irish girls and seemed so down-to-earth that we thought we could always walk over and say hello.

Westlife 1998-2012 @TinieTinah shares fond memories and crunches the impressive numbers

he dark day has finally come… Westlife are no more (well, almost). Many children of the nineties may shed a tear for the soon to be dearly departed from the pop world but let’s reflect on the fabulous times the ‘Loifers brought to us…

…Oh, by the way - there’s still a new Westlife single coming out. And an album. And a ruddy great tour next year an’ all (do you think Bryan will make a come back?) So fans still have time to indulge their love for love songs before the gents hang up their microphones forever.

Westlife (c) PA

Earlier this month the band announced they were taking a break for a couple of years but it was confirmed in an official statement today (October 19) that the remaining four members will part for good.

"After 14 years, 26 top ten hits including 14 number one singles, 11 top 5 albums, 7 of which hit the top spot and have collectively sold over 44 million copies around the world, 10 sell out tours and countless memories that we will forever cherish, we today announce our plan to go our separate ways after a greatest hits collection this Christmas and a farewell tour next year. The decision is entirely amicable and after spending all of our adult life together so far, we want to have a well-earned break and look at new ventures. We see the greatest hits collection and the farewell tour as the perfect way to celebrate our incredible career along with our fans. We are really looking forward to getting out on the tour and seeing our fans one last time.
"Over the years Westlife has become so much more to us than just a band. Westlife are a family. We would like to thank our fans who have been with us on this amazing journey and are part of our family too.
"We never imagined when we started out in 1998 that 14 years later we would still be recording, touring and having hits together. It has been a dream come true for all of us."
Kian, Mark, Nicky and Shane
Fond memories and things I’ll miss
  • First and foremost: the stools!
  • The getting up from the stools when reaching the dramatic key change in songs
  • The emotional hand grab move
  • Ballads galore
  • Shane’s smouldering lead singer look
  • Mark’s high notes
  • The fact that Nicky always look liked a fit football player
  • Kian and Brian’s dodgy blonde curtain hairstyles
  • Putting your arms out when singing Flying Without Wings
  • My Mum singing You Raise Me Up for hours on end  - maybe I wont miss that…
Westlife (c) PA
The numbers
  • When the band was formed in 1998 it was originally called Westside but had to change the name as another band had had that clever idea first
  • Westlife sold over 44 million records worldwide
  • Had 14 number one singles in the UK
  • Were the only act in British and Irish history to have their first 7 singles peak at number one (an impressive run ruined by Bob the Builder)
  • Clocked up 11 million album sales in the UK making them the biggest-selling band of the decade (and the second best-selling artist after Robbie Williams)
  • Coast to Coast was the band’s best-selling album and the fourth biggest-selling of 2000 (it also beat a certain little group called the Spice Girls to the chart top spot)
  • Performed at 10 sell out tours
  • The band is worth millions – it was reported earlier this year that the profits of the band's firm grew five-fold in 2010
  • You thought they took over the world but the Americans weren’t as keen as the rest of us – Swear It Again was their only ‘hit’ Stateside. It peaked at number 20 on the Billboard chart there.
  • They spent 13 years under Simon Cowell and his Syco record label before moving to RCA
What’s left

November 13 – new single Lighthouse

November 13 – new Greatest Hits LP

May 2012 - UK arena tour

Westlife 3

I know Westlife are technically a manband now but they started off as wee ‘uns. So who will the boyband balladeer crown be passed down to out of their whipper snapper counterparts?

The Wanted? One Direction? JLS?

From 'IOU' boys to millionaire men, what now for Louis's lads?

By Ken Sweeney
Thursday October 20 2011
Ending up with a combined wealth of €35.5m, it is ironic that Westlife started out in a boyband called 'IOU'.
It was in 1998 that Shane Filan's mother, Mae, invited pop manager Louis Walsh to check out the Sligo-based group he had formed with schoolmates Kian Egan and Mark Feehily.
Jettisoning a couple of members, the pop svengali with the midas touch added Dubliners Nicky Byrne and Brian McFadden.
Walsh already had a hit boyband called Boyzone but longed for an act without the egos of his main charges.
He certainly found it in Westlife.
Ironically, Boyzone not only supplied the fan base, but singer Ronan Keating also helped to manage the group. But, put simply, it was suits, stools and ballads that made Westlife multi-millionaires.
As evidenced by a string of hits starting with debut single 'Flying Without Wings', which entered the UK charts at number one in 1999, swiftly followed by 'If I Let You Go'.
Each of Westlife's first seven singles topped the charts, and before long Westlife had secured their place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
As a live draw, Westlife began their career supporting Boyzone around the UK, before landing a slot on the annual Smash Hits Roadshow, which resulted in them winning best new act award at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party.
More hits followed but there were hiccups along the way.
In March 2004, Bryan McFadden, always the most volatile, left the band to pursue a solo career.
The remaining members soldiered on with sell-out tours, albums and DVDs, keeping the awards rolling in with two Brit awards, an MTV Europe award and two Record of the Year awards.
In 2008 after recording and touring relentlessly, they reached what many saw as their pinnacle, selling out 82,000 tickets in a day for a triumphant show in Croke Park, after which they took a year off.
Always careful with their money, lead singer Shane Filan ploughed his into a property company he runs with his brother Finbar, which was behind a development of 91 houses in Dromahaire, Co Leitrim.
Filan already owns a mansion worth €2m in Carraroe, Co Sligo, overlooking 13 acres which is close to another palatial mansion he built for his parents.

Oh yes it’s all very sad isn’t it? No more heart-wrenching ballads from the boys. Shame.

Westlife: A long goodbye for the boyband that played for the Pope

By Ella Pickover
Thursday October 20 2011
WESTLIFE were one of the hottest boy bands in the business, breaking numerous chart records on their climb up the pop ladder.
And they intend to bow out while they are on top with one last album and a farewell tour next year.
During their career they racked up 44 million record sales, sung with diva Mariah Carey and even performed for the Pope.
The Irish group started life as a threesome, with Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan performing pop covers during intervals in theatre productions in their hometown of Sligo.
Their big break came when they were spotted by X Factor judge - then Boyzone manager - Louis Walsh, who managed to land them a gig supporting the Backstreet Boys in Dublin.
In the audience was singer Ronan Keating, who felt that while the band was special they needed something else. Two more members were sought and when Bryan McFadden and Nicky Byrne joined, the group was born.
Prior to a support tour with Boyzone, the group was called Westside, a name which Walsh, who managed the band for many years, had apparently seen written on the side of a bin.
They then took part in the annual Smash Hits Roadshow, and were handed the best new act award at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party.
But as a result of legal wrangles over the group's name they were renamed Westlife and released first single Swear It Again in 1999 with instant success.
The song leapt to the top of the charts and the band's next six releases all reached the number one spot, making them the first band to have their first seven consecutive singles reach number one.
Tracks If I Let You Go, Flying Without Wings, double sided single I Have A Dream and Seasons In The Sun, Fool Again, their duet with Carey on the Phil Collins' classic Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) and My Love all secured the number one spot in the UK charts.
In 2000, they won a head-to-head chart battle with the Spice Girls, with Westlife's Coast To Coast triumphing. But there was disappointment when What Makes A Man failed to take the Christmas number one - held off by Bob The Builder.
They scored a huge hit in March 2001 with a cover of Billy Joel's Uptown Girl, released in aid of Comic Relief. The song sold 750,000 copies and was their biggest selling single.
Later that year they were asked to give a private performance for Pope John Paul II in the Vatican because of the late Pontiff's admiration for their chart-topping music.
In 2004, McFadden broke the hearts of fans by announcing that he was leaving the band. But the group carried on successfully as a quartet, and had nine top 10 hits since his departure.
McFadden, who at the time was married to Kerry Katona, said he wanted to split from the band to spend more time with his family, but later that year his marriage broke down and he was divorced in 2006. He has since had an engagement to Australian singer and actress Delta Goodrem, which was called off earlier this year.
Singer Feehily won admiration for announcing he was gay in 2005 while Byrne is married to former Irish premier Bertie Ahern's daughter Georgina and Egan is married to former Hollyoaks star Jodi Albert, who is expecting their first child.
In 2008, the band marked their 10th anniversary with a concert in Croke Park, Dublin, attended by more than 83,000 fans.
They have released 10 albums - are due to release a greatest hits compilation in November - and in the UK alone, they have sold 11 million albums and six million singles with 26 top 10 hits.
They gained 14 number one singles, the third-highest total in UK history tying with Cliff Richard and trailing behind only Elvis Presley and The Beatles.

Egan says McFadden not rejoining Westlife

Kian Egan has put an end to reports that Brian McFadden is set to reunite with his former Westlife bandmates.

McFadden left the band in 2004 to pursue a solo career and the group not only stayed together but continued to achieve chart success.
Recent reports suggested that the foursome was preparing for McFadden to make a return however Egan, whose wife Jodi Albert is expecting their first child, denied the reports.

Kian Egan denies reports that Brian McFadden is rejoining Westlife
He wrote on his Twitter page (@KianEganWL): "All the rumours about Brian rejoining Westlife are untrue. We have been a 4 piece for too long now. We love Brian but it's not going to be. That includes any tv performance.
