Westlife, Riverdance and movie star Neeson all lined up for big royal gala

Westlife

Saturday April 16 2011
SOME of the best-known names in Irish music have been added to the line-up for Harry Crosbie's exclusive gig for Queen Elizabeth.
The Point Village boss is determined to pull out all the stops to wow the monarch during her visit to Dublin next month, with plans well underway for the historical cultural evening in Crosbie's new Grand Canal Theatre.
The Herald can reveal how among those being head-hunted for the VIP musical event are Westlife, The Chieftains and the cast of Riverdance.
Organisers are also hoping that Hollywood legend Liam Neeson will perform a poetry reading to add some A-list sizzle.
Chatting
The British ambassador Julian King was seen chatting to members of Westlife backstage at their Dublin gig last weekend, further fuelling speculation that they will perform at the gig.
"They're being tipped to sing You Raise Me Up. It's undoubtedly one of their biggest hits from the past 12 years and is always a massive crowd pleaser," said a source.
The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, will fly into Ireland on May 17 for a three-day visit, with a carefully planned schedule in operation for their time here.
It's the first official visit by a British monarch to the Republic and has sparked some controversy, especially given the queen's visit to Croke Park.
This week, PJ Stone, of the Garda Representative Association warned that €25m would be needed to fund the massive security operation which will be on a scale similar to that of US presidential;visits.

Westlife land €100k gig in millionaires' playground-minus former boss Cowell

By Melanie Finn
Tuesday April 12 2011
Chart-toppers Westlife will be adding to their bulging bank accounts after nabbing an exclusive gig in Dubai.
The Herald can reveal how the four Irish stars are being flown to the millionaire's playground to perform a once-off concert for the Jebel Ali International Hotel's 30th anniversary celebrations.
But the services of Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan and Shane Filan certainly don't come cheap -- they'll be picking up a rumoured €100,000 for their two-hour stint on stage.
Seeing them perform in the United Arab Emirates city isn't for those worried about their finances, either.
Fans of the Raise Me Up crooners will have to fork out a cool €85 for the gig in the Jebel Ali International Centre of Excellence, which is in the heart of the glitzy city.
Speaking to the Herald backstage at their O2 gig in Dublin, Nicky Byrne spoke about how much the lads were looking forward to it.
outdoor
"We're going to Dubai on Thursday and we haven't been back there since 2005 so that will be a good one. It's an outdoor gig, I think it's for about 6,000 or 8,000 people. It's going to be great," he explained.
The four lads, who have been together for 13 years and have shifted 44 million records, have just finished the Irish and UK leg of their tour, which included five sell-out gigs in the O2 Dublin as they toured their new Gravity album.
They have now entered a new phase in their career after they opted to leave Simon Cowell's label SyCo in favour of moving to Sony RCA.
Nicky has since claimed that their former boss Simon Cowell was more interested in his own fame than the band.
"We signed to Simon back in 1998 and he was brilliant but then came the development of X Factor and American Idol.
"Simon became famous himself and his interests went that way rather than on Westlife. We almost felt a little bit unloved with Simon Cowell, if I was to be honest," Nicky explained.
However, the switch to Sony RCA after 13 years with Cowell is a good move for the band, Nicky claimed.
"We need someone telling you that's going to be a hit or not. Simon got so busy and would do it at the very last minute and we needed someone who was on it all the time.
hectic
"We have that now at RCA. It's their job to put us in with the right producers and co-writers."
However, Kian has admitted that their hectic schedule is starting to take its toll on the band members, the older they get. "It's getting slower, it's getting harder. We came straight off the tour and it's straight into the Greatest Hits phase off the back of this, it will be another whole whirlwind. It's not going to stop after this tour. It's going to be pretty manic for the next year and a half," he explained.
"When we finish this tour, we've got a few foreign gigs and then it's straight back into the studio. Then we've got a load of summer shows and then the first single from the Greatest Hits coming in August so it's really, really fast this year. Since we've left SyCo, because of the way they did things, we really wanted to turn things on their head."
Yet despite them revisiting some of their best-known hits from their lengthy career, he also ruled out any reunion with former member Brian McFadden, whose future is now up in the air after his split from former fiancee Delta Goodrem.
"I don't necessarily see it happening, it would have to be something really special and something small, not this big thing," he added.

Wonderland: Dance Studios!

From Boys To Men

Westlife lead singer shane filan talks simon cowell, x factor and new single, safe, ahead of their Dubai show.

Westlife felt "unloved" by Cowell

Following Westlife's split from Simon Cowell's Syco label last month, singer Nicky Byrne has spoken about the group's relationship with the 'X Factor' boss.

Westlife - Looking to the future

Byrne told Ahlan! Live.com: "We signed to Simon back in 1998 and he was brilliant, but then came the development of 'X Factor' and 'American Idol'.
"Simon became famous himself and his interests went that way rather than on Westlife. We almost felt a little bit unloved with Simon Cowell, if I was to be honest."
Byrne continued: "We need someone in A&R [the Artists and Repertoire staff at a record label] telling you that's going to be a hit or not. We had it with Simon but he got so busy and would do it at the very last minute and we needed someone who was on it all the time.
"We have that now as we've just moved across from Syco records to RCA so it's a different team. It's their job to put us in with the right producers and co-writers so if it goes wrong then there's someone to blame but if it goes right then happy days. We're in that position now where we have someone working on it full time."
Byrne also said there was more to the group than just ballads.
"We have been tarnished with a very ballad brush, but I'm not the boring guy who likes dressing in a suit and sitting on a stool so I'm not sure why we developed into that," he said.
"It's not always about recording a ballad and only a ballad. If we are going to keep up with the big pop stars then we have to think outside of the box and that's what we're doing now with our new team."

East meets West

Legions of ladies in the UAE have been digging out their old CDs and swooning at the news that Westlife are returning to Dubai.
The Irish boyband, who are the only act in British or Irish history to have their first seven singles go straight to No.1, will be
performing at Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa on Thursday. And as much as they’ll be hoping to impress us with new material from their album ‘Gravity’, which was released in November last year, the band will also be leading us down memory lane with some classics.
Despite performing the same ballads over and over again, band member Nicky Byrne says he and the boys never bore of belting out the old favourites.
He explains: “Bored is a bit of a strong word. It sometimes feels a little bit monotonous with some songs but every year we’ll sit down with our musicians and most years there’ll be new faces and they’ll perform in a different style so you keep it as fresh as possible.
“You’d never get away without doing songs like ‘Flying Without Wings’ or ‘You Raise Me Up’ but we also have the uptempo side as well with ‘Uptown Girl’, ‘World of Our Own’ and ‘When You’re Looking Like That’. Those are songs that have been big hits for Westlife and you wouldn’t want to not perform them.
“Apart from the songs you can chop and change every year, there are the core five or six you wouldn’t and couldn’t ever leave out.”
Having formerly been managed by Louis Walsh, now a judge on Britain’s ‘X Factor’ programme, Nicky is a huge fan of TV talent shows.
But the singer does express fear over what happens once the interest in the new-found talent has subsided and auditions for newer stars are being held. “It’s a brilliant idea but I just fear for the people who are instantly famous, in the papers everyday and then all of a sudden there’s no album deal and people forget them.
“People are fickle, they’ll say ‘X Factor was brilliant this year, did you see X, Y and Z?’ and then as soon as January here it’s all forgotten and there’s a whole new team of potential celebrities who are good, bad and indifferent. I feel for those left behind,” he adds.
“We’ve been lucky enough to perform on ‘X Factor’ on several occasions over the years. You go in there as artists who’ve been around for years and you have to be better than them - the pressure is on without a doubt! “Thankfully we’ve always done OK but I’ve seen some artists go on over the years and not done so well... without naming names!”
Westlife play Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa on Thursday. Tickets start at Dhs250 and are available from Virgin Megastores and www.boxofficeme.com

More than a teenage fanclub...
Having been around for 13 years, Westlife have gathered an army of fans along the way. Picking up new supporters with the release of every album, Nicky says there are some who’ve followed them since they first began.
While the band may not  incite the Tom Jones underwear-throwing- effect just yet, Nicky says the older fans certainly appreciate more than just the music nowadays.
He explains: “We started in 1998 and did an arena tour back in 2001.
Back then our fans were 15, 16, 17 years old,  they’re now 28. You strike up a bond with them and you see them every year at concerts and they have funny banners. The older we’ve got, the more adult the banners have become! It’s always fun.”
And Nicky says the lads are particularly looking forward to returning to the UAE.
He adds: “We haven’t been to Dubai for a while, I think it was 2005 when we were last there. “We’re genuinely looking forward to coming back. “It’s always nice when you go back to a place you haven’t been to in a long time - especially Dubai where there’s a lot of people from Ireland, England and Europe as well.
“We’ve been so lucky over the years to see the world, whether it’s been only five minutes in every place, at least we can say ‘been there, done that’.”

It's a scrum as boys in blue mobbed by fans at Krystle victory night out

By Melanie Finn
Monday April 11 2011
Leinster painted the town blue after their super Heineken Cup quarter-final victory over Leicester.
Team captain Leo Cullen led the line-out of troops straight into Krystle once the team dinner was over as the players celebrated making it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
And all the stops were pulled out to ensure they had a night to remember.
Playboy co-owner Rangan Arulchelvan was on the door of the VIP bar himself, as he welcomed in the delighted players and their partners.
He had cordoned off a large area of the club especially for the post-match celebrations, with blue wristbands given out to attendees.
Leinster skipper Leo was one of the first to arrive with his fiancee Doireann Ni Bhroin, who looked stunning in a one-shouldered pink mini-dress.
Despite being exhausted after the big game, he was joined by all the members of the team including Brian O'Driscoll, Jamie Heaslip, Luke Fitzgerald, Shane Horgan and Johnny Sexton. Also there were all the members of the Leicester Tigers team, who were the first to arrive, coming into the club shortly after midnight.
Obviously keen to drown their sorrows, they wasted little time in downing multiple shots at the bar as they made the most of their night in Dublin.
Among those spotted were players Martin Castrogiovanni, Ben Youngs and Tom Croft, as well as the Tuilagi brothers, with the gang staying there until well after 3am.
Hobbled
"The place was absolutely heaving," said a source.
"Word had got out that both teams were in there and the place was mobbed.
"They cordoned off part of the section especially for them but even that area was jam packed. As well as the usual regulars, there were obviously lots of girls in trying to score themselves a rugby player."
The players were joined by Irish Leicester player Geordan Murphy, who hobbled in on crutches but told the Diary he was "doing okay"
Midway through the celebrations, there was a minor commotion in the club with the arrival of two members of Westlife.
Straight from their gig in the O2, they were brought in through the back way of the club to their reserved area.
Boyband star Kian Egan was there with his wife, Wonderland singer Jodi Albert, while Mark Feehily was there with his long-term partner Kevin McDaid.
They were both joined by quite a sizeable entourage of friends, who were brought directly to the largest table in the VIP suite.
Making quite the impression on the rugby players were gorgeous socialites Avila Lipsett and Emily O'Donnell, who was turning heads in a little red dress.
Avila, whose older sister Roz is still modelling in America, explained how she's back for good now from London and is working her way up the ladder in RTE sales.

It's sad for Brian but there's no hope of a reunion, say Westlife

SYMPATHY: Nicky Byrne says Brian is a nice guy

Monday April 11 2011
WESTLIFE have ruled out any Take That-style reunion with 'prodigal son' Brian McFadden.
There's no immediate plans to welcome the former member back for a one-off performance, with the lads themselves admitting it's "unlikely" to happen.
While talking to the audience during one recent gig, their jokes about how they might bring out McFadden were met with a chorus of boos.
Nicky Byrne (31) has revealed how he "feels sorry" for Brian after his split from fiancee Delta Goodrem. None of the band members has heard from the Artane native after he confirmed his seven-year relationship was over.
Speaking for the first time about Brian's newly single status, Nicky said his sympathies would lie with him.
"I haven't actually heard from Brian at all. I like him and I genuinely feel sorry for him. I would never wish any badness on him. He's a nice guy, deep down," he said.
McFadden quit the band in 2004 to go solo, but failed to achieve the same success.
As Westlife finished a string of five sell-out dates in the O2 last night, Kian Egan also said they hadn't heard anything from Brian. "Not a word, not a text, not a tweet, nothing," he said. Asked if there was a possibility of working with Brian again, now his relationship with the Aussie crooner had run its course, he said it was unlikely.
"We really don't see it. Given that we're doing a Greatest Hits tour, there's obviously a little whisper of should we do something with Brian or not?" he explained.
"And who's to say we won't? I don't necessarily see it happening, it would have to be something really special and something small, not this big thing."
The co-manager of Wonderland also said how his heart went out to the former couple in the wake of their split.
"Of course, Delta and Brian are both lovely people and it's always sad to hear when a couple break down," he continued.
"Jodi [Albert] is a very good friend of Delta's and every time when we were around together, the four of us would go out and do something together. It is sad, I just hope they're both okay."
He went on to say how everything had been going "absolutely superb" for the boyband and the move to the new label had given them a huge boost.
"The O2 is a very special venue for us and we feel it's probably one of the best venues we've ever played. It's just the intimacy of it and the way it's laid out. It's just been amazing playing to the home crowds again," he continued.
"This year we have a platform that comes right out over the audience.
"We haven't done that since we were in the real boybandy phase of our career when we were jumping around in the white suits.
"You see older women going absolutely nuts, you can make a lot of eye contact with the audience and it's great to have that."

Nicky Byrne on Westlife's new direction and being abandoned by Simon Cowell

Westlife have been topping the charts for over a decade and with nearly 50 million albums sold, one of the World’s most successful boybands shows no sign of giving up. After walking out on Simon Cowell’s label Syco records last month, the band are already working on new material with record giants RCA to rival the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Katy Perry.
When Ahlan! Editor Nathan Kay caught up with band patriarch Nicky Byrne this week, he admitted, “Pop music is moving on and when you look at someone like Lady Gaga she is the new Madonna. You’ve got to try and cling onto that as much as you can. Hopefully the new producers we are working with this year can come up with something a little bit of a step up from what we did last year. Not necessarily up tempo but great songs.”
“We have been tarnished with a very ballad brush but I’m not the boring guy who likes dressing in a suit and sitting on a stool so I’m not sure why we developed into that. It’s not always about recording a ballad and only a ballad. If we are going to keep up with the big pop stars then we have to think outside of the box and that’s what we’re doing now with our new team.”
After 13 years under the supervision of music maestro Simon Cowell, one would have thought that with his vast knowledge of the industry he would be able to guide the boys in the right direction but not according to Nicky: “We signed to Simon back in 1998 and he was brilliant but then came the development of X Factor and American Idol. Simon became famous himself and his interests went that way rather than on Westlife. We almost felt a little bit unloved with Simon Cowell, if I was to be honest.”
“We need someone in A&R telling you that’s going to be a hit or not. We had it with Simon but he got so busy and would do it at the very last minute and we needed someone who was on it all the time. We have that now as we’ve just moved across from Syco records to RCA so it’s a different team. It’s their job to put us in with the right producers and co-writers so if it goes wrong then there’s someone to blame but if it goes right then happy days. We’re in that position now where we have someone working on it full time.”
Two years ago, the band reached a point where they had to take a break and re-evaluate their focus and direction. It’s now an ideal time for the boys to get their teeth stuck into their careers and give it their best shot with RCA. Nicky admits, “The break was well needed but it was only a year so it wasn’t like when Boyzone or Take That had a break and then got back together. Nobody did any work and we just thought lets not have an album out this year and it worked well. Taking a year out set us up so that we can make a good go of it for two or three years then maybe take a break. We had What About Now which was a really big hit for us everywhere and we’re on tour right now which sees us go all around the world and then across to Dubai.”
Ahlan! magazine is a huge Westlife fan so we are as delighted as you guys that the band will be heading over to Dubai on Thursday April 14 as part of their Gravity tour. Luckily, Nicky is a fan of the UAE and can’t wait to head out. “It feels good to be back, it’s been too long. It’s an amazing part of the World and we can’t wait. I remember last time we were there we did the concert in an open air park and it was pretty spectacular so coming back to the Middle East is very special.” Nicky says.
So, with all of this new found vigour and excitement back in their careers are the band going to take advantage of recent media reports that former band member Brian McFadden will be rejoining the group?
“Well, I always say never say never but some of the boys may have a different attitude on that. We certainly have no plans to do that and the reason why I say never say never is because I’m older now and things come and go and I would have no problems with hooking up with him again, at the right time and for the right reason, for a song, a tour, an album but that’s yet to be discussed.”
“We’re still friends but friends to the level of where we talk to each other on Twitter and have each others numbers. It’s like having an old school friend but then again we all shared something that nobody else can understand. Therefore, doing something with Brian, I think, would be fun. I don’t want to get to the stage when this is long gone and I think back and say why didn’t we do anything with Brian. I know Brian is quite sentimental and I have spoken to him about things. He will text one of us or when we’re chatting and say you’ve got to go on Youtube and check out X, Y or Z and you’ll see it and remember those times.” At this point, Nicky’s twin sons Rocco and Jay, with former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern’s daughter Georgina, left, can be heard scrapping in the background and as he steps in to break up the fight, he admits, “It’s great being a dad. It’s stressful as they get older, but it’s great. They love coming to the shows and trying the songs and the moves.”
“As a dad I would love them to play football as that’s what I did when I was growing up. Whatever they want to do, as long as they are strong, happy and healthy and we have a strong family unit then I’m happy with that.”

Gay Byrne returns to Friday nights

TV

Legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne is to present a music and chat show, which will appear on our television screens between July and August.

Byrne, who presented the Late Late Show on Friday’s for 37 years between 1962 and 1999, will once again be returning to that slot.

The new show will run for six weeks and is, confusingly enough, titled For One Night Only.

The guests are yet to be announced, but it is expected to be in the vein of Westlife: For One Night Only, which the 76-year-old presented in December.

Gaybo, who reportedly earns €200,000-per-annum from RTÉ, currently presents the religion themed interview series The Meaning of Life.

He also presents a Jazz show, Sunday with Gay Byrne, on Lyric FM which attracts an audience of 55,000 listeners.

Blog: Westlife told, ‘For God’s sake, just split up will you!’
Blog: Westlife have been urged to split up by music fans who mis-heard today’s news headlines about their separation from music mogul Simon Cowell.
The ‘band’ has left the music mogul’s Syco record label and signed a multi-million pound new deal with Sony RCA.
But music fans who were still half-asleep this morning only heard the words ‘Westlife’ and ‘split’  on the radio headlines.
Many could be heard weeping when they realised their mistake.
“We were so close,” said one fan. “I really thought this ongoing nightmare was at an end. Now they’ll just go on and on and on…”

The Wanted increase dates to five at Hamilton

BRITISH racing's summer concert season, which starts with Rick Astley at Haydock on Saturday, has added three dates to the biggest racecourse programme ever assembled.
Hamilton has added a second stand-alone show, with chart-topping boy band The Wanted booked for Friday, July 22. They are followed the next evening by Westlife.
Course chief executive Vivien Kyles said: "Over the last few years our strategy has been to develop our capability of hosting high-profile events on non-racing days and we are now building on the huge success of our first stand-alone concert with JLS last year."
Tickets start at £25 and are available online from hamilton-park.co.uk and ticketmaster.co.uk, or by calling 01698 283 806 or 08444 999 990.
The booking means that The Wanted become the most popular racecourse artists of the year, with five appearances.

Carlisle, which hosts Sharleen Spiteri and Texas on Saturday, July 2 and features Alexandra Burke on ladies' day, Monday, August 1, has finalised a three-date series of concerts with an eye on the younger generation by booking X Factor finalists for Sunday, July 24.
Already confirmed are Rebecca Ferguson, runner-up toMatt Cardle last December, and Aiden Grimshaw, the 18-year-old from Blackpool.
Pre-booked tickets from £11.90 are available online at carlisle-races.co.uk, or by calling 0844 579 3002.
Biggest crowd for a racing-music event this summer is almost certain to be at York on Saturday, July 23, when Scouting for Girls - not as previously published - take to the stage, following the previous evening's performance by Blondie.
Last year's equivalent raceday, which featured X Factor finalists, was a 42,500 sell-out, and course rep James Brennan expects a similar crowd this year.
He said: "All bar about 500 people arrived before racing last year, so it's clear that we are selling the sport to people, as well as the concert, and the proceeds help us to finance prize-money for a £100,000 Group 2 race and a £50,000 sprint."
